Frequently asked questions about the beaches on La Graciosa
CHOOSING A BEACH
That depends on what you’re looking for. Playa de las Conchas in the north is widely considered the island’s most spectacular beach, with white sand, a dramatic volcanic backdrop, and Montaña Clara rising directly offshore. However, due to strong Atlantic currents, swimming is often unsafe. If you want to swim, Playa Francesa or Playa de la Cocina are much better choices.
Playa de la Cocina, at the foot of Montaña Amarilla, is the island’s top snorkeling spot. The water is exceptionally clear, the seabed is sandy, and marine life begins just a few steps from the shore. La Graciosa is part of the Reserva Marina del Archipiélago Chinijo, Europe’s largest marine reserve, home to more than 228 fish species.
Playa Francesa is the most family-friendly beach, offering calm, shallow water, fine white sand, and easy access. It is located just 2.5 km from the harbor and can be reached by bicycle in about 20 minutes. Keep in mind that none of La Graciosa’s beaches are supervised, so children should never enter the water without adult supervision.
SAFETY & RULES
No. None of La Graciosa‘s beaches have lifeguards, so you swim at your own risk. The beach flag system applies: a red flag means swimming is strictly prohibited—without exception. Atlantic currents, especially along the northern coast at Playa de las Conchas, can be particularly dangerous.
There are no officially designated nude beaches on La Graciosa. However, Spanish law allows nudism on beaches as long as it does not cause disturbance to others. On more secluded beaches—such as the sandy cove of Playas de las Agujas at Barranco de los Conejos—naturism is generally tolerated and rarely questioned.
GETTING THERE & LOGISTICS
All beaches are accessible only via sandy tracks, as there are no paved roads outside Caleta del Sebo. Playa Francesa can be reached by bicycle in around 20 minutes. For more remote beaches, such as Playa de las Conchas, a jeep taxi or a several-hour hike is recommended. There are no rental cars on the island.
