FAQ: Canarian Cuisine, Restaurants & Provisions on La Graciosa
DISHES & CUISINE
The cuisine on La Graciosa is traditional Canarian cooking with a strong focus on fresh seafood. The island’s signature dish is Vieja al mojo – parrotfish caught in the morning, grilled fresh, and served with mojo rojo or mojo verde. Typically accompanied by papas arrugadas – Canarian wrinkled potatoes. Other local favorites include lapas (grilled limpets with butter), sama, cherne, and the rich, soupy arroz caldoso.
Vieja is the Canarian name for the Mediterranean parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) – the island’s signature fish. It has firm, mild-flavored flesh ideal for grilling. On La Graciosa, it is caught in the morning and served the same day. “Al mojo” means it is served with mojo rojo (spicy, made from roasted peppers) or mojo verde (fresh, made with coriander and garlic).
Papas arrugadas are small potatoes boiled in heavily salted water until their skins become wrinkled and coated with a thin layer of salt crystals. They are the quintessential Canarian side dish – served with fish, meat, and just about everything else. Always accompanied by mojo rojo and mojo verde.
RESTAURANTS & PROVISIONS
All restaurants on La Graciosa are located in Caleta del Sebo. The best known include Rosa La Graciosa (creative cuisine, reservations recommended), El Marinero (arroz caldoso with sea views), Restaurante Enriqueta (traditional Canarian dishes), and Bar El Veril (lapas, tapas, authentic local atmosphere). No restaurant chains, no international cuisine.
There are no large supermarkets. La Graciosa has three or four small grocery stores in Caleta del Sebo selling basic essentials – no Mercadona, no Lidl. Since all supplies arrive by ferry, selection is limited and prices are a little higher than on Lanzarote. It’s a good idea to buy important supplies on Lanzarote before crossing.
SPECIAL DIETARY REQUIREMENTS & DRINKS
La Graciosa is a traditional fishing island – most restaurants specialize in fresh Atlantic seafood. Vegetarian and vegan options are limited but available: papas arrugadas, salads, grilled vegetables, and mojo sauces are widely offered. With a little communication, most restaurants can prepare a meal without meat or fish.
The Barraquito is one of the Canary Islands’ most iconic coffee drinks: espresso, Licor 43, sweetened condensed milk, milk foam, and a cinnamon stick – all layered in a glass. On La Graciosa, it’s the perfect way to start the day while watching the first ferries arrive at the harbor. Unmissable.
